Most people I know who are over 25 had to do a little time in Fast Food Hell. I only know a couple of people who didn't. If you're over 25 and have never worked in Fast Food Hell, why and how did you avoid it? What did you do instead?

I worked retail in high school and college, then I became a student worker on campus.

I guess I didn't get away from it though. I'm an engineer at a food manufacturer.

I'm not quite over 25, I've got a few years to go yet, but I've never worked in fast food and never will. Jobs that I have had are at Michaels' Arts & Crafts store, Office Max, a gas station that also had a kitchen (made things like pizza, burgers, doughnuts, etc & drug stores which include Drug Emporium & Walgreens (this one was my worst-paying job ever). My duties were:

Michael's: cashier and sales assoc on floor
Drug Emporium: cashier in front & at fragrance counter
Walgreens: cashier at front & minimal training in the photo lab
Gas station w/ kitchen: cashier, cook in kitchen
Office Max: cashier & sales assoc on floor

And in all jobs my duties included tidying up the store, etc for the store closing.

Fast food is not the only option. I'm not sure why ppl think that is the only place that young ppl can get a job. One of my friends who is a couple years younger than me has worked in several fast food places. Other jobs available to young adults include clothing shops, grocery store, banks (I have a friend who is in college and works as a bank teller), walmart, kmart or similar stores (sams club, costco, etc), target, toys r us, babies r us, linens and things, bed bath & beyond, shoe stores, old navy, discount perfume shops you see in the malls (or any shop or kiosk in the mall really), beauty supply stores, etc etc. ask yourself where your general interests lie and make a list of businesses in those categories that are in your area.

Me.

Never worked in fast food or retail. I have no idea how I avoid it except that I was always stuck in someone's office as a clerical worker. Now I'm working in the medical field. Go figure!
