This is a quote from someone famous back during the 1800's, I don't remember the name, but he said that humanity needed to become vegetarian for it to survive.

Keep this in mind: water is running out.
Animals need: crops and to grow crops they need water, animals need water.
Plants: need to be water only, no need to grow crops.

Is becoming vegetarian the only to survive?

I dont see how you could assume the world would go vegitarian and not need to grow crops? If water is running out how do you plan to water the plants? No, I do not think the world needs to go vegitarian to survive - however, I do think we need to take a serious look at the manufacturing process of our meat and the cruetly that we inflict upon factory farmed animals.

Well, when you consider global warming is melting the polar ice caps, which are all fresh water, then we are all on the verge of being flooded with too much water. I'd say this is more of a threat to mankind's survival than eating animals.

Unless you count nuclear war. Bombs will still explode regardless of what we've been eating.

This is only further proof that being famous is not synonymous with being intelligent. Look at some of the nihilistic comments from our geniuses in Hollywood. Does the word "omnivore" ring a bell?

Another way would be the drastic reduction of the population, as bad as it sounds for even thinking it.
