The mathematician is a woman, and the two brothers are not related to each other because they are only half brothers to the mathematician. They all get along, though, because the woman is very smart and knows how to play to their male egos. Secretly, she tells each of her brothers that he is her favorite brother, but not to tell the other brother because she feels sorry for him.
