I'm currently considering going back to school to get my masters -I graduated from college 5 years ago and unfortunately did not get written references from any of my professors. Who can I use as a reference?
I was thinking of using my boss and supervisors, but i work in a completely different field than what i intend to go back to school for.

If you're considering an MBA, MSW, MPA, or other administrative degree, then ONE letter from your employer will do.

However, academic grad programs (MA in humanities or social sciences, MS in hard sciences) will very much prefer letters from your former professors.

Contact your former professors, send them a current resume, tell them which classes you had with them, send them copies of papers you wrote for their classes, and remind them of the grades you received.

In these letters to your former profs, also tell them about things from their classes (readings, assignments, etc.) that inspired you, and let them know exactly why you want to go to grad school, and why you think you will succeed in graduate studies.

They should then be able to write good letters for you, even though you've been out of school for some time.

Best wishes.

I would go back to some of your professors you had as an undergrad. I know it's a long shot but you have nothing to lose. In your letter write something that stood out about that professor (i.e. an article that he/she wrote), and tell them what you are applying for and why.

Good Luck!
