Try thrift stores and flea markets. Ask around at flea markets ... many sellers have stuff at home.

You can buy a decent guitar cheap these days. I'd stay away from anything with a tremolo system (whammy bar) in this price-range. Guitar would not likely stay in tune. You could upgrade the pickups someday and have a pretty nice guitar if you start with a cheap fixed-bridge. As long as the neck is straight and you have it set up by a tech... or learn how to do it yourself. http://www.icepoint.com/guitar/Setting%20up%20your%20electric%20guitar/ Many people would go with a little lower action on the bass side than they recommend. The bridge pickup height is usually set around 1/8" from the string on the bass side and 1/16" on the treble side when pushing down on the strings at the last fret. The other pickup(s) may be similarly adjusted for the best mix of sound in the middle switch positions that use multiple pickups.
This Les Paul copy from Stagg is a well-built bargain. This guitar will play and sound well enough to please most anyone without mods. http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=3985580 Check reviews at Harmony Central http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews/Guitar/product/Stagg/L320+Les+Paul+Copy/10/1 I would recommend a small amplifier from Peavey or Crate that has some built-in effects for good sound and a little variety at a low price. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Crate-GLX15-Combo-?sku=487683 If you want to seriously jam with a drummer... You'll need a 100-watt amp... or to hook up or mic the little amp to a stage sound system.
You can spend less... But this is gear you won't soon feel the need to upgrade. The guitar will really keep you happy until you want something name-brand to show off on stage...LOL. The price is low considering that... A cheaper no-name amp will likely sound crappy and discourage your playing.

It depends on what you mean. If your are a complete beginner, Ebay is a good option. You can buy a package which involves a guitar, gig bag and 10 watt practice amp for around £100 or $130. In order to buy a brand new "marque" guitar, any decent music store will sell you a standard Fender Stratocaster for around £400 or $500. Many music stores have notice boards where used instruments are advertised and you can obtain a quality guitar for around £200 or $350. Tell your friends that you are on the lookout for a guitar. It is surprising how many people have a good quality guitar locked away in a cupboard because they thought it would be a "good idea" to learn to play but they never got round to it.

Not to sound like an azz but good and cheap shouldn't even be in the same sentence....try your local pawn shops, got a fender stratocaster for $125 at one...and unlike ebay you don't have to pay shipping and handling, wait on the product to arrive, or even worse just get took for your money

You can buy a cheap guitar and you can buy a good guitar, but, you very rarely can buy a good cheap guitar.. spring for the mid-range, since money is an issue for you, and buy the best you can for your money...

Uh, not in America. You can get one that's at least playable and decent-ish at Target or Costco, but I'd recommend going to somewhere super-reliable, like Guitar Center or summat. Just be very sure to not buy anything online without seeing it IN PERSON first, and if you're a beginner, then get the opinion of someone who isn't.
