Books make you think. You have to imagine the story, picture everything happening, decipher phrasing, occasionally use context clues, things like that.
Television engages the senses. You not only get a story, but you get visuals and sounds. Seeing and hearing something is as close to experiencing the story as we can get. A turn of phrase may catch one's attention, but images and sounds have a greater impact, much of the time.
And with books, it's sometimes easy to become sleepy, disinterested, etc, especially if the plot is dragging. We are accustomed to putting books down; they are written so that we can do just that at some points. Television holds our attention; it is designed to be that way. It's meant to be riveting. And we wonder, what is going to happen? And often, if we drift off or leave, we miss things. So we stay and watch.

Personally I don't agree with that statement. TV is basically for mindless losers who want to be entertained without putting forth any effort. Books are a great way to tune out the world for a while.

i think people don't have the capacity for real imagination these days. we are all so hung up on others entertaining us that we don't remember when it was fun to think of fun things to do. i like television as much as anyone else, but the fact is human-kind is headed for disaster. when t.v. shows begin to dictate your lifestyle it becomes a plague rather than entertainment, sort of like being addicted to something. kill your t.v.

i love to read, but i also love tv. reading is wonderful because books are so intricitely crafted. but tv is always changing, new shows, new plotlines, new characters. a good book never changes, and while that is a good thing, tv can be more interesting because of that fact.
but i would still choose reading over tv

Probably because television doesn't require imagining things...it's already there in front of you. Just watching something happen is "easier" than imagining it and picturing it in your head.
