a paper bag?

no probably a gene somwhere, which increases the urge for us to look after the little bas.... blighters...
was needed because when the apes came down from the trees, their body shape had to change, to enable them to walk more upright, they gradually started to become more upright, and as they did the birth canal became bent, which meant that young had to be born slightly less developed and with smaller, softer skulls, which meant thatthey needed more time to develop after the birth, wich meant that the mothers had to spend more time at the begining bonding, and teaching an dhelping the babies to grow, thus somewhere along the line the genes developed for this to become instinct....(nakes us think those big eyes are so cute) if those genes where not present perhaphs we would not find babies attractive, and abandon them as some animals can and do without a thought...

hmm interesting...
ahh neurochemistry.. cant help it it just makes me think..

or could be they are just little and cute and squashed.. and they have not pissed us off yet...

The need to hold and comfort something so small and helpless. it may sound funny but even the scent of a newborns skin. The softness and smoothness of their skin, the wonder and depth in their eyes, and probably the unlimited potential.

They are not attractive at newborn usually with pointy heads and red faces. However, because your endorfins (happy chemicals) kick in you think they are the most beautiful thing you have ever seen. By the time you come reound they usually are!

Well, I don't think they're very physically attractive when brand-new; they're all scrunched up. :-)

However, later on there's something about the eyes; in almost all newborn species the eyes are larger, which makes them look helpless, and we automatically want to take care of them.

You may just like babies or the idea of having one but no new born will ever be as attractive as your own. Its a part of you and you created it, thats the emotion, but you are also programmed to respond to it genetically, it is a must so that we do not abandon our very vulnerable offspring, that was the sort of science bit!

Innocence

New born babies are so tiny and helpless, all you want to do is love them and cuddle them. It might be the smell of baby powder or just that pink scrunched up look they have. It brings out that parental feeling.
