This is what I would do if I were you...
First look for a hostel in and around there... check out hostelworld.com for that, I have found them to be the cheapest so far. But the Hostel isnt such a great place to bring a lady to. You may want to get a hotel for at least one night, and you can find those on hostelworld too, as well as www.hotwire.com. They are usually the cheapest. Next I would take a bus, its always cheaper, unless South West air is running deals then they are CHEAP. look at www.southwest.com, or on travelocity for "flexible dates".
If thats too much, i would say any ticket over 50 dollars, then look at greyhound.com, bus is usually the worst way to travel i think, but the cheapest. The train costs too much in America. Then take the bus and get to the hostel, take your cell phone and call her and meet up.
I think this would cost you about 100-150 dollars. Thats about as cheap as you can go, unless you look on craigslist.com, and post/look for rideshares, ask for a rideshare to norte dame, people go there and are willing to take a passenger if you pay for half the gas or something. But who knows maybe you will get stuck riding with a bikini bus on its US tour, or a crazy psycho who will try to hurt you...

Hitchhike there, then stay in your G/F dorm in secret... Hope her roomate is away for the weekend and doesnt come back. take her only to fast food restaurants and eat, or hold up in the room and orders pizzas.

Southwest will probably give you the best compromise of cheapness and quickness. Fly from Omaha to Midway and then take the South Shore Line (nictd.com) to South Bend. If you book early, you can get the flights for about $39 apiece, and then $11 each way for the train, so ~$80 plus tax.
As for lodging, I'm sure she has a male friend you can stay with. I wouldn't want to risk getting busted by her rector.
