thank you for all your comments i thought it would be a good idea to write down the date on the seed packet and nail it to the post by where i sowed the seeds but the rain destroyed the packet and i couldnt remeber exactly when i did sow them. its my first attempt at growing veg and they seem to come out ok

Bearing in mind the strange weather we have experienced recently it is hard to tell.
We planted both carrot and beetroot and have been using them already - tasty they are too.
Suggest that you try one of each and determine for yourself if ready.
Remember the younger they are when used the better they taste.

Look on the seed pkg to see how long to expect; should you no longer have the seed containers, go to W*M and view the seeds for sale pkg. then go home and calculate when you planted; how long has it been, and see how close the dates match. Step two (should you omit step one), pull one up and decide if it is TINY or is it small, but eatable..then make a decision!

The only way is to pull one up and see. Dont leave it till the veg leaves have "bolted"(gone to seed) or the veg will be very tough and stringy.

First you must know the time it take for your veggies to come to maturity. And for some vegetable, the foliage of the plant will start to turn brown, that's a sign of maturity then you dig them up and send mine over, bye.

right on "who be boo"
Most root vegetables taste good while they are young and tender : )
The longer they are in the ground the tougher the fiber becomes.
They are mature for sure once the plant tops stop growing or begin to wilt.

dig one up or brush the dirt off the top layer to see how big they are, carrots are still tasty when they get big, but the beets are better when still small.
