First, congratulations! Knitting is amazing.
I purchased the Vogue Ultimate Guide to Knitting and it's very good. It covers almost every technique, with clear instructions.
People will tell you to get the Stitch 'n B*tch books, but mostly it seems they're only good if you know next to nothing at all, or for the patterns. It's not great for more advanced techniques, etc. The patterns are good though, so go for it if you want, but it's not the best reference.
www.knitty.com is amazing. It inspires me every time I'm there.
http://knittinghelp.com is great because it has videos, which help so much with techniques that you just can't figure out.
http://knitting.about.com/ might help, but I don't really use it. I just have it bookmarked.
When you eventually need patterns, knitty is great and so is magknits.com. Both have a large variety of free patterns for both beginners and advanced knitters.
Hope this helped! Good luck with your knitting. :)

Congratulations on learning to knit! It is my craft of choice. The 'knitting help' and 'DIY' sites that were mentioned in previous answers are excellent. I have been knitting over 50 years, and I have learned things from both of them. Another good one is http://www.lionbrand.com/. They also give crochet instructions. I always suggest that beginner knitters make dishrags. They are useful and it really doesn't matter if you make a mistake. For beginner crochet--Granny Squares. Lion Brand is doing a series of them--look under their free patterns.
I have also included 2 sites for free dishrag patterns. Knitting nonsense has patterns for all 50 states, plus letters and numbers. The other site is a little more advanced, but still basic and great to learn. Have fun!

Hey congrats on learning to knit, I'm a 3 month old newbie myslef. http://www.diynetwork.com is a great place to get help along with real fun easy patterns (I love it) if you have cable or sattilite and get diynetwork whatch it they got really great tips on "knitty gritty" (thats what helped me learn how to knit), and find some groups to join here on yahoo they are really very helpful and everyone is real friendly, plus they have links to some real awsome websites. Before you buy any books go check some out at the library, because they are pretty expensive and you don't want to waiste your money. Try buying some books on e-bay you can find some really great deals there (I do all the time). Knit on!

Just google "basic crochet" or "basic knitting" and you'll find sites that show you how to do all the types of stitching. What really helped me learn was finding a pattern online for something that I wanted to make (like a scarf). Then I tried it, made mistakes along the way, and learned along the way

You could try locating a knitting group in your area. Your local yarn store might have a list of groups that get together on a regular basis. Most groups welcome beginner knitters and sometimes it's helpful to watch another knitter when you want to learn a new technique. You might be able to locate a group in Yahoo that physically gets together (search for your town's name in Yahoo groups) or you could try looking for groups on http://www.meetup.com.
