The only determining factor between freedom and responsibility in the press is the conscience of the press.
The Bill of Rights states Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of the press. There is no stipulation based on responsibility.

Responsibility? For the most part, the press does.
With the exception of defamation or true threats, pretty much anything the press publishes is (in the US) constitutionally protected. But that protection extends to areas that responsible journalists would never go near.
Embarrassing the familes of politicians, making up stories and passing them off as truth, selling their journalistic integrity to pander to hate-mongers.... these are legal, but not responsible.

You do. Freedom is protected by the First Amendment. Responsibility is determined by laws against libel, laws against revealing state secrets, and so on.
If someone in the press is not acting responsibly, they are discovered and ousted. Some by losing readership. Some who are discovered as frauds are fired.

First of all, it's the responsiblity, of the press, to present a non-biased opinion, on what is the news.
Secondly, its to be news-worthy, punctual, and informative, verifiable information, that is important to the people.
Where the balance comes in, is will this information be harmful to others? Will it damage others? Will it cause someone to die?
A lot of times, responsibility is fed to pigeons, by writers who want to air out someone's dirty laundry....or to that matter, they love to trumpet other's failures.
Sure, failures sell newspapers, but there is a balance, to what you want to say....and when you shouldn't say it.....that balance, has been lost in places.

The Main Stream Press hides behind the second amendment all the time and they have lost any responsibility they thought they had. Their credibility has been lost!
