I got a hamster from my nibor, and it seems to have been abused, not by him, his son, he is terrified of people, unless hes outside of his cage, i open the door, he pops out of his house, and when he gets the small of my hand, he shoots back inside, he is also scared of my other hamster inside the same cage, Stalin, he isn't the smartest thing in the world, he doesnt even know anyone even lives in his cage but him, he treats gorby like another object in the cage, he doesnt run when i pop my hand in the cage, hes clueless, he never gets lost, he just wanders away untill noone know whare he went, so stalin isnt 'beating' on gorby, gorby will come in a house and litterally push stalin out the door, and stalin will go find another house, i cant stand to have this hamster treating stalin like this, and he is terrified of hands, sometimes he will bend over in a corner waiting for me to go away, all defensive, i need some help, no one replies to me stuff. they are russsian dwarf hamsters

he doesnt run away, he just hides, if i pick him up, hei whole attitude changes, hes nolonger agressive or afraid, stalin still doesnt know whare himself is, he acts like hes outside when i put him back in the cage, they dont try to run away, but gorby sometimes falls on the floor and yells FREEEDOM and then avoids being touched, so i put cellophane plastic to all the entrances and exsits whare he ould go and play my gba in the dark untill i hera him. i agree, a hamster wasnt my first idea of a pet, i would mark you as best answer, but then people cant answer. Stalin is the clueless one, gorby is newer, and somewhat of a sissy, he only squeaks when he gets tapped by stalin, who is just wandering araound the cage

It's a bit confusing on which hamster is being dominant, Gorby or Stalin and which one is the new one? The new hamster doesn't sound like it has been abused, it's just not tame. Laying on it's back , curled, is a defensive posture by hamsters.

You will have to spend some time getting him used to you, first by just laying your hand in the cage and letting him eventually work up enough nerve to smell your fingers and explore. It will take time.
I know other people on here have some good hamster links that explain in detail how to get a hamster to trust you enough to be held.

The other behavior sounds like one is trying to establish dominance. I wouldn't worry as long as they aren't fighting or drawing blood.

I love animals, but have not had any hamsters, so I do not know a lot about them. It does seem as if this poor little guy has been abused, they are very sensitive animals. There is a website you may find helpful, there is actually some people on there who are hamster experts and hamster lovers, so they may be able to give you some ideas. The website is AsktheVet.com. I have used them in the past, when I have had questions about my own pets, and they have been quite helpful. You may want to separate the two hamsters for now, if you are able to get another cage; as stressing out either Stalin or gorby will not help any of you at all. There will be other pet owners on that site which you will be able to communicate with as well as the vets. Good luck to you and your pets. You did a good thing to get an abused pet away from the abuser. Have a nice day!

Most all hamsters will run if they have not been handled a lot. They also bite if they are not used to people playing with them.

Rats are much better pets. They are frendlier, cleaner and SMARTER than all the other small fuzzys. You can even train a rat to do some simple tricks. Also, they don't run away every time you set them down. They will actually sit with you and spend time just relaxing while you watch TV.

Forget the hairless tail, rats are good people.

umm is it safe to have two grown hamsters together? or have they been together since they where small. Because usually hamsters are solitary animals and dont accept other hamsters unless they have been togehter since they where both babies.

Other then that chances are that hamster has had bad experiences but they usually recover over time and start trusting you more. Just give it time.

You should def split them up if they are fighting.

solid on you for status up for the hamster! you will possibly desire to defo tell your father and mom. Your cousin won't be in a position to be depended on on my own with the hamster. with any luck you will possibly desire to undertake him and she or he would be in a position to nonetheless visit him. solid good fortune!
