How to factor?

The question is like this factor the following x^2 - 12y + 5xy - 3x these arent the exact numbers but the exact form and i dont know if I need to factor by grouping or what? if someone know something about this please help

if someone could actualy make a detailed solution to the above equation so that I can look at it so that it may help me with my actual homework problem

well first of all you have to know what the variables are and then you have to substatute the numbers in for the variables and after that you have to times 12 by y theen 5 times bye xy and 3 times by x. After that you subtract and then add left to right and you should get the answer.

It might look like this. x2- 12y + 5xy -3x so if x=10 and y=2 then you would do it like this

and the factor would be in your glossary so if you find the meaning it would be really easy:)

(10)2 - 12(2) + 5(10)(2) - 3(10) so then you would solve
20 - 24 + 100 - 30 and it would equal 66. This is just an example. Oh yeah im only in 8th grade:)

The problem that you have can not be factored into 2 factors. However, if we change the problem to x^2-3x-3y+xy you can factor by grouping.

x^2-3x-3y+xy -original polynomial
x(x-3)+y(-3+x) - the first 2 terms have a factor of x
- the second 2 terms have a factor of y
- the stuff in parenthesis is the same
(x+y)(x-3) - final factored form

You can always check your answer by multiplying the two factors with FOIL.
