Which came first - the chicken or the egg? "The chicken" came first - in the sentence of the question. If the question is phrased differently, the answer is different.
Reframing the question
It could be said that the question simply requires one to know the context. Most people thinking of the question automatically think of the timeline and it is in this manner that both the previous evolutionary theory and religious teachings contexts arise. Other potential contexts are:
* Having looked through a dictionary from front to back, which came first? - the chicken or the egg?
* When you walked through the supermarket, which came first? - the chicken or the egg?
* When reading the menu, which came first? - the chicken or the egg?

well if you use the word "its", meaning the chicken's own egg ei the egg it hatched from, then certainly the egg was laid by its mother. The egg would contain an embryo of the chicken.
So egg first.
but "its egg" could also mean the egg laid by the chicken itself. So the chicken must grow to a reproductive adult then lay the egg.
So chicken first.

Actually i think its the egg as its the starting point for evolution, how it will adapt to the envirmnment depends if the egg was layed in a safe place, if it was she chicken, it wouldnt have survived, and neither would have its chicks, it wasnt able to adapt.
if primitive chickens had not evoloved to survived in the envoronment, how did the eggs survive?
if you want a religous answer, it was the chicken as the egg needs warmth to grow, and without chickens that god had created, the egg would have not survived.

The egg came first. It was the product of mutation and was probably laid by something close to a chicken, but not a chicken.

One of my grade school teachers always said that the egg came first becuase dinosaurs laid eggs. That's a pretty retarded answer.
