Totally normal.
I'm no spring chicken, retired now with former medical and research career. I love the game. And I didn't used to do 'computer games', in fact I had to rebuild my computer in order to be able to play The Sims 2 because the old one only did normal 'work'. I played solitaire or mahjongg sometimes, not much at all. But the Sims 2 has swept me up. :)
On the Official Sims 2 BBS, some of the moderators that help the bulletin board are retired medical doctors and nurses or engineers. There are a lot of younger folk on the BBS but no surprise... some gamers there are moms and dads with kids from preschool to college age. You can chat on the BBS if you have registered your game and get problem solving help or share things that have been built. You'll meet professionals from all walks of life. Some are architects and architect or not, they build the most amazing Sim houses. As a member, you can download utterly cool houses like this one:

The reason why the Sims 2 has such great appeal is that it really is open ended. It gives a person a method develop areas of their creativity and imagination.
Here you can see what another adult has done:

And to keep gameplay interesting, people of all ages make challenges:

Have fun with your game! You could invite one of your coworkers to play a sim that you started or just show them how to build a house with a swimming pool, or a very cute sim in the sim creator - tell them to make a sim look like a celebrity or like a person they know.
In fact, if they enjoy building sims that look like celebrities or people they know, they can download this too, and have a lot of fun with it:

That one is on a teen site, LOL, but that is because EA made an arrangement with the magazine to promote the game with them. :)
Happy Simming!

I know alot of adults that play and love that game.
Make the decision for yourself. I for one and I am loving Dark Star One right now it is really up to you not them what you see yourself as is up to you, Somone that thinks you are a fool based on just one game you play is not your friend
