Setting up a wireless connection?

Hi I hope someone can help me. I have a Toshiba Portege 7010CT Laptop computer with Windows XP. I also have a desktop computer. I bought a router and my desktop is hooked up to my router but I cannot get my Laptop to recognize the internet connection. My only real question is do I need a network card and if not how can I get my Laptop to recognize my internet connection ? I connect to the internet VIA cable modem. your laptop has to have the capabilities to pick up the wireless internet. this means that it has to have a wireless internet/network card. find out if it comes with it and if not you can buy a card and install it yourself.
