I have had pain for several months in my hand - the meaty part of the palm connected to my thumb. I went to three doctors - two hand surgeons - and none said it was tendinitis. One actually said it can't be tendinits in that area of my hand because there is no tendon. However I have found several things online of people being diagnosed with tendinitis in that area of the hand. I have included a picture with the area of pain - it is the red line. Any info would be helpful - I just really want to know what the problem is since doctors don't have an answer for me. They have dismissed carpal tunnel, arthritis, fracture, cyst, etc. The pain is also starting in my other hand since I am using it while resting the original injury. It is deep muscle pain rather than joint pain - but rest doesn't seem to help and I thought it was tendinitis but doctors I guess didn't.

Here is the picture of the area where the pain is located(the red line):

I have never experienced any kind of numbness in my hands. That is the main symptom of carpal tunnel. And there is no pain when typing it is only located in that area of the palm/thumb and is muscle pain rather than something that could be caused by a nerve such as carpal tunnel.

I believe the injury was caused by extensive guitar playing. I have not played in over 4 months and I had three weeks of therapy and was on an oral steroid that did nothing. Doctors tell me it is overuse but it still hasn't improved and my other hand is now hurting the same because I've primarily been using that one instead. I just really want to know if it is possible to get 'tendinitis' in that area of the hand. Not having a clue what the injury is doesn't help one bit in recovery.

Does the pain interfere with your sleep?
Are you feeling depressed at all?
Is the pain a dull ache, but in a clear area?

If you can answer yes to all three questions then there is a slight chance that you have Fibromyalgia. Bring this possibility up to your doctor, "Do you think it could be Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Fibromyalgia?"

I started getting a pain between the first and second joint on the first finger of my right hand. I was doing a lot of fine painting for my job and the pain came out of nowhere. This all started in October 1998.

2 years later, and after a whole lot of grief, the pain had entered my left hand and was starting to colonize my right leg. I had many tests and several diagnoses (including carpal tunnel). All of them found no fault with me. Finally, in 1992 I was sent to the hospital for every test known to man. After all that I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. A diagnose only given when nothing else covers it. Fibromyalgia (FM) is a permanent condition that creates a cycle of depression, insomnia, and chronic pain. There is no cure, no treatment, only the symptoms can be treated. For some reason it shows up mostly in white women.

My situation sounds similar to yours, the pain coming in the other hand is what makes me suspicious the most. If you are using your off hand more than that hand should start to feel better, before the other hand starts to feel a lot of pain.

The problem is that there is no test for FM; it is a diagnosis of last resort. Bring it up to your doctor if you are having sleep problems. I suggest asking for a prescription of Trazadone, a safe antidepressant with the major side effect of sleepiness. Ask your doctor for a prescription for Tramadol (the generic for Ultram). It is a nonspecific treatment for chronic pain, and does less liver or kidney damage than do NSAIDs (Motrin, Aleve and so on). If this drug helps then that is another point for a possible diagnosis of FM. You will need a whole lot of other proof before a firm diagnosis of FM can be given though.

I am not saying you have FM, I am saying that if nothing else seems to work then it could be FM. If you have the cycle of depression, chronic pain, and insomnia then that is a major clue. If so they you may need to see a psychiatrist. Most doctors don’t want to treat FM because there is no cure. Some doctors don’t even believe in FM, although the Federal Government, Social Security, and the Veterans Administration do believe in it.

If you do have FM, or if you suspect it then you can contact me for more information. Meanwhile it could be overstress, but if this pain doesn’t go away, if nothing else seems to work then this is a possibility. If you start treating for the insomnia early then you can slow the progress of the disease. I also have a lot of knowledge about treating insomnia.

The term "tendonitis" and muscle overuse injuries are frequently interchanged. There is a good deal of muscle there in thenar eminance. So even though there is no tendon there, you could certainly be experiencing an overuse injury of the flexor pollicus brevius or abductor pollicus. However, steroids should have helped with this condition (maybe the next step would be an injection which is more localized).

No, it could be carpel tunnel. My mom has tendinitis in her elbow and she has to get the tendon cut. So it sounds like carpel tunnel
