Apparently not.

They can if they actually want to.

It seems that the mainstream press has checked out and forgotten what their job is. Any well written press release complete with fake quotes will make it into the paper these days and that gives a "reporter" a story without having to do any work.

The who/what/when/where/why has been replaced by an acute awareness of advertisers and sponsors and it's difficult to find a neutral source for news.

There have been some frighteningly extreme cases of governmental censorship in the past 5 years but news organizations seem to not be fighting it as they did in the past. We all know that we can watch Fox news for a Republican perspective or go to Air America for a Democrat slant but it would be hard to find any dozen people agree on a source that is neutral.

I'd love to see the press take back the news but, until that happens, I count on the blogosphere to tell me the truth. By reading both "left" and "right" blogs, I can usually ferret out the reality for myself and in reality, it's always best to do your own factchecking :)

Whose censorship? and Whose propaganda? The big problem with liberals in the main stream media is bias. Journalists have biased views, and it becomes difficult to be totally independent.

Sadly, threading the line between censorship and trying to maintain a paying audience has led too many media outlets to tell people what they want to hear, with little concern for objectivity.

Accuracy is not important to the Main Stream Press any longer.

It should be possible, but who cares about accurate stories when all they want are ratings.
