Whats string theory?

It's knot worth worrying about

If it had been proven true, it wouldn't be a theory. Mostly it's a theory that evolved in order to solve paradox problems with time-travel theory. Personally, I don't think either time travel is possible or parallel universes exist. String theory is the theory sub-atomic particles are made up of tiny, vibrating one-dimensional strings. For the most part, it's just a mathematical representation of matter - developed as a way to describe everything in the universe.

Will and William B, you need to go read a science textbook until you understand the difference between a hypothesis and a theory.

There isn't really a "theory" of parallel universes. The existence of parallel universes is a solution to one interpretation of certain aspects of quantum mechanics. String theory may extend them, but these aspects of the theory have been around a lot longer than string theory.

One of the concepts of quantum mechanics is that things don't have hard and fast realities. Most things exist in what are called eigenstates, states of possibility. The most common popular expression of the eigenstate is in the Schroedinger's cat thought experiment. When the time has elapsed, is the cat alive or dead? Neither, said Schroedinger. The cat exists in a universe of possible eigenstates, in which the percentage of "dead cat universes" is equal to the probability that the radioactive element has decayed during the time frame.

But eigenstates aren't just used to torture cats, even theoretically. Why do we define the electrons around an atom as existing in an "electron cloud?" Because we really don't know where they are, only where their energy level says that they could be. When we measure their position, as Heisenberg says, we collapse the wave function and know where they are, but change the experimental conditions.

The concept of parallel universes arose because in every eigenstate collapse there is at least one other possibility. One other state for the cat. One other place (or more) where the electron could be. And the Copenhagen interpretation says that we are not just measuring an outcome, collapsing the wave form in this one universe, but splitting the universe in two, creating two separate universes where different possibiliites exist.

I like the idea of Copenhagenism. In the macro-scale, it's created numerous excellent science fiction stories. I'm thinking of Heinlein's The Number of the Beast... or Gould's Wildside, particularly, but isn't any alternate history (Turtledove, Harrison, etc.) an application of the many-worlds interpretation? But in real life, we aren't talking about whether Caesar survived his attackers or Wilson didn't catch flu at Versailles. We're talking about did Madeleine Jones, student in Prof. Veerhoot's physics course at UCLA, create 15 alternate universes last Wednesday while doing her lab work? These universes, exactly the same as ours except that an electron cloud was collapsed into a single electron at a different place in orbit around an atom, continue to march forward being exactly alike in all other respects because electron positions don't determine who wins presidential elections or launches missile attacks or discovers the cure for AIDS.

I think it would be hideously boring to be able to travel to parallel universes and discover that except on the quantum scale, mostly they're exactly like ours.

Anyway, you'd think by now the absolute elsewhen would be overloaded with alternate universes.

a string theory is a political view as if 1 party X, for example, would stringed the other political party, Y so it would stumble and fall. they also called that the theory of the dominoes. in canada we have seen the phenomenon when the Mulroney's government was overthrown by an axle to low, like a continuous presomption of mishandling the government moneys. a string will continuously overcast a same sound and view, to a realistic assumption, it does exist. the americans called this sort of political venues as boomeranged the political string. it happened all the time. one day, it is a full support of all americans let say the president's point of view, and the next, it is the boomerang. there is no such thing as a parallel world,or universe. we are our own world and universe. nobody is copying you, for what it would be worth anyway.....mind me....

well the parallel universe theory might be true, but it is difficult to prove.String theory is the theory that all matter is made up of tiny vibrating "strings".String theory is another difficult-to-prove theory, and is regarded as some as phseudoscience.

String theory would take more to explain than a Yahoo Answers box. I suggest you go read one of the books by Dr. Michio Kaku, I found them to be very easy to understand and thorough.

no one knows if it is true, it is yet to be proven. String theory is supposed to be the mother of theories that everything derived from it includes the energy of e=mc2 , which most of our modern technologies are derived from.

It is not a theory and it is not true.

It is just wishful thinking or fantasy

look, we have all been deceived into believing a lie. that lie has been perpetrated by the devil. most people don't understand why believing in God w/out knowing if He is real is the way to live. God doesn't like to be questioned, so please don't. Have a wonderful day! You are His child.
