There r two options with u.
Either to use ur pic or use ur avatar. If u want to use ur avatar. Visit http://avatar.yahoo.com Make ur avatar there and save it. Or u bring the icon of avatar on ur yahoo toolbar. To do so cilck the pencil, select personal options, select add edit button and check the box of avatar and then click finished. It will bring the icon of avatar on ur yahoo toolbar which can be used by u anytime as per ur convenience.
Secondly, to use a pic, u need to hv 360 page. Visit http://360.yahoo.com to create ur 360 page and upload ur photo there. Make sure that u set ur photo to be primary photo which u want to use on yahoo answers. After doing these things, come back on ur yahoo answers profile. Here u click edit info and then click either the circle of using ur pic or the circle of using ur avatar. Now click the preview and save. It will solve ur problem.
Besides above two U hv any one of the following options also.
Avatars are becoming favorite choice of everybody at yahoo answers, yahoo messenger and at other yahoo services. People want to hv different kind of avatars to suit their interests and preferences. You need to create a Yahoo 360 page to upload a photo, otherwise you can't.

Set up a Yahoo! 360 account and put a picture of yourself there. Then back in Answers choose the your 360 picture in the account section. Worked for me.
BTW, the cartoons are called avatars.

Talking about your cartoon avatar well to get a real pic there you will have to down load one on the 360 page and then come back to answers and edit your avatar to your real pic.

It helps if you have a digital camera to download pictures onto your computer for starters...

open yahoo messenger, then MESSENGER on the menu up at the top, then DISPLAY MY IMAGE, SHARE MY PICTURE, then press SELECT (should be on the right side of the screen), then you should be able to find your pictures on you computer, just highlight the picture and tell it OK.

click on your avatar pic pic then you have to use 360 degree

You have to go t you´r answer home page by clicking on your (avatar)picture. than you have to click on EDIT MY PROFILE. good luck!
