Not synonymous, but a symptom.

When the govt starts complaining about what the press is saying about them, that govt has reached a point where it cares more about its own internal agenda than the values of freedom and liberty in its society.

So, a good indicator of how far towards authoritarian a govt is going is how much it tries to silence or prosecute the press, and how much it tries to keep track of what everyone is saying.

We were promissed, under the American Constitution:
Freedom of the press.
Freedom of speech
Freedom to own an arm.

Later in the year 1964, the goverment pass new laws, giving you freedom from being rejected from renting a house, buying property. "The Civil Rights Of 1964".
But, sad to say we do not have freedom of press!!
The Media, will only print what they want. Their business iis not to tell you the truth, their business is to sell newspapers!!

maybe - but freedom of the press is not synonomous with a democratic regime (say, if the pres is technically free but controlled by a small number of interests that also have the leaders in their pocket).
