Good social studies question. If anybody says pouring money into other countries its a good thing, they are wrong. If anybody says pouring money into other countries is a bad thing, they are also wrong. Its quite mixed.
Keep in mind that in the United States even those at poverty level can afford to be overweight and have cigarettes. There are also opportunities for those who are willing to purse them. There is help tp pursue education, various financial aid programs available, and a variety of work available. And there are always welfare programs. It may not always be easy to see, but opportunity is available.
Compare this to many other nations where you have many who die of starvation. The soviet union had stories of bread lines. I remember we did have lines here, but they were for x-boxes. North Korea and half the African continent is in terrible condition.
America has had a major influence in world events in the past 100 years, from The Russo-Japanese treaty to Iraq. Whether we admit to it or not, the affairs of other nations do impact us, and often times assisting other nations works to everyone's benefit, including the United States.
A century ago, we funded columbian revolutionaries to break away from their nation. In turn we got the Panama canal, which still saves the world money and time in tthe transportation of goods. The Marshall plan created the world as it is today. It saved Western Europe from communism, another world war, and rebuilt Japan. It turned enemies into trading partners.
Sometimes there is global disaster if the United States does nothing. World War I and II are good examples. They probably could have been stopped early on with proper intervention. That's why isolationism doesn't work. If you don't help other nations, they are more likely to become an enemy later- and belligerant at that.
This explains some of the US spending, but not all of them are good. Vietnam was a waste of money and life. North Korea is a waste of money. Isreal is a wate of money. Our best hopes for peace died with Rabin. Iraq has been a big waste of money and life. Not all countries are good investments. Acually, some really suck, and make Americans angry and then they start to ask these questions!
Ultimately, United States is still a great place to live, there is lots of opportunity for the poor.here. It just takes a bit of poking and some work. Sometimes Its a good thing to help other nations. Sometimes its really stupid.

I don't think they're pumping money into other contries to save them from poverty; rather, they want to have power and influence over them in order to accomplish their agendas---don't ask me what that is!!! But yeah, it's basically power-mongering. Look at Ughanda and Sudan, extreamly poor countries...our gov. isn't dumping money into them...guess those particular countries don't have any power-mongering benefits to make it worth their effort!

Very good point there. If American government spent less time interfering in other countries internal affairs, concentrate on it on affairs I don't think there be to much anti- American feeling around the world.

because there always has to be a lower class for the upper classes to prosper, our country can fix that problem but doesn't on purpose, as for the aid to other countries its like bill gates donating a million to charity, just a gesture in the name of politics

Because there is always an ulterior motive for helping the poor somewhere else so that it will benefit the USA in the long run. Helping your poor is not very profitable.

I agree, but do you remember when things have happened around the world and we get criticized for not coming to the aid fast enough or for not giving enough...we can't win for losing, and our efforts are often unappreciated or funds are funneled to the "wrong" parties.

Well said. I don't understand why we care more about poverty in other countries more than our own.

I don't know and I often ask that question myself. There is nothing wrong with taking care of your own people first. But it is nice to help people during a crisis.

Government people know more about the whole picture than we do (I'm not taking a stance here), but I think we all need to keep attention on this.

If we'd mind our own business, maybe 1/2 the world wouldn't hate us so much!
