which geostationary satellite over Indian ocean transmits beacon signal at VHF? What is its longitude & beacon frequency? I need this information to study ionospheric scintillations of satellite radio transmissions by monitoring their field strength.I am located at Kolhapur (geogr lat 17deg North, geogr long 74 deg East) ,India in SHIVAJI University.Thank you, Regards, Prof.RV Bhonsle

There are likely several TV and other VHF satellites over the horizon in your location. NASA has a Java tool that will show you about 900 different satellites. The ones in the large radius equatorial band are the ones in geo orbit. Click on them to get their names.

Scintillation due to ionospheric turbulence is well studied because use of the very satellites you are interested in depends on it.

I am not sure that you will find any geostationary satellites radiating a VHF beacon. Beacons from commercial satellites will be in either/both C and Ku bands as they are used by tracking receivers at earth stations. The frequencies depend upon the actual satellite but the information is available in Intelsat documentation and from the various TV broadcast operators.

I am not sure what you want to do but to study scintillation effects you need to look at the same satellite from a number of different locations so that you are looking through different section of the atmosphere and can try to correlate the results with weather information. This has all been done before and a search on the Internet will bring you a very large number of papers.

I imagine that this information would be closely controlled, as who wants their satellite taken over by hackers?

Are you talking about a particular satellite or any satellite that is available? If a particular satellite, do you know who owns the satellite? Have you tried asking them? If not, you might want to contact major Indian television stations, or CNN, as they probably use satellites over India. AT&T or the major Indian telecommunications provider might help, too.

Hughes Aircraft launched a number of satellites for other nations back in the 1980's. Maybe they have one parked over you.

I imagine that you would have to prove that you are whom you say you are to obtain this information.
