These are connections to the database from network computers. The whole idea is that many computers can have access to your SQL database. Keep in mind that some of these are proprietary, and might only work on Windows networks.

ODBC - Open DataBase Connectivity
DAO - Data Access Object
ADO - ActiveX Data Objects

ODBC and ADO are different ways in which you can connect your SQL database to front end programmes. For e.g. if you have written a program in Java and you want to link it to DQL database you would have to use ODBS or ADO to connect to the database.

ODBC it is a standard- offer maximum portabily for any platform (Linux, Mac)
ADO it is developed by Microsoft and it is for windows.
