It sucks because most games default resolution is 800 x 600.

Do you have a crt monitor? If so get a new monitor some of those do that or just wait it outmine does that at 1024 by 720 and thats the one that i use all the time just wait it out it must work because the computer sarts up with that res. (800x 600

Try going to your Control Panel under video card settings and see if there's something there. If it's a newer game and an older computer, you may have a compatibility problem.... worth a shot though.
Also, if you're running XP, and the game is a 98 game, you can try using "run the program like it's 98). Just some options.
