It is just a saying and should be reversed to say you are not as smart as you think you are. Because when you ge to that point just means you found out about something that you really should not have and not smart enough to know how to get away with knowing it.
You was too smart for your own good by finding a way to get an ATM machine to spit out money which just got you in trouble. If you was really smart you would not have gotten caught. So You was too smart for your own good but not as smart as you thought you was.

Intelligence is a great thing when properly applied, but when it begins to get in the way of social skills and what-not, it can be detremental to the development of a person. Also, "ignorance is bliss" has an element of truth in it as well. With each new thing that a person learns there is more put on his shouders. A person can be too smart for their own good, but that point is not at the same place in all people. Some people can be incredibly smart and still be social and well rounded; whereas, others may not be able to balance a large gammit of things as well.

True intelligence is never wasted. Being too smart for one's own good is by definition not valid since being smart entails knowing what to do with the gift one has been given.

You can never be too smart for your own good because no one is and never will be that smart. Besides there's always something you dont know and something new to know.

No. If a person is truly 'smart' they already know they don't know everything. It's the people falsely believing they are smart that want to prove it at every turn.
