Well, manuscripts have been written since written language has been around. People didn't start writing on paper until they figured out they could turn papyrus into paper, and then it was written on as scrolls instead of books. Books developed over time. First they were all hand written, then the Gutenberg press was invented. No one invented books. You can get a good history at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Books#History_of_books.

Johannes Gutenburg invented the printing press, so I guess you could say it was him.
