You need to see what kind of RAM your motherboard supports. If you go to crucial.com or somewhere with a memory scanner, it may tell you what kind of RAM your motherboard can support. If you currently have a stick of PC2100, you may not be able to support PC3200 ( the stick you are looking at buying).
Sometimes the RAM can work at lower speeds, but not always. And if the speeds on your RAM don't match, it will run at the lower speed.
Go through Crucial's system scanner or use memory advisor if you know what kind of PC/motherboard you have. That will tell you if the memory you are trying to buy will be supported in your system. Then you can buy the memory you need from somewhere else if you want.

Okay here is a stick of PC2100 memory at newegg.com and the information is listed as well. Good price for a One Gig Stick, so you could get 2 and have your system maxxed.

Get corsair valueselect ddr ram, very stable.
Use cpu-z to see the speeds of your memory so you don't buy the wrong one.

philip,
Go to this site, enter the make and model of your laptop, and they will tell you the exact specifications for the memory that your laptop uses. You can buy from them or go to Best Buy, at least you'll have a price range and the exact specification for your memory.
