Compulsory motorcycle training as most of the journeys we make are 1 person i.e. commuting to work and back using a 1 person form of transport is the obvious solution , I mean come on be honest how many times have you been stuck in traffic and had to watch bikers nipping past you getting home before you get to the next exit . Plus motor bikers ( true bikers not idiots ) are one of the safest road users because they pay more attention to what other road users are then the road users normally do i know i have become a more observant driver since i started riding the motorbike , more observant drivers = better drivers = less crashes = cheaper insurance = everyone wins plus my bike does nearly twice the mpg of my car therefore saving more money and polluting less only downside with bikes is the price of tyres otherwise definitely cheaper to run in every way than car . Another option is to walk your kids to school if you're only going local , for example if the school is less than about a mile away walk instead of drive saves money and helps keep the kids healthy , win win again

Now you've got me started.

1) Set up a centrally run car-sharing scheme. At present car-sharing has to be organised by individuals and it's too time consuming to sort out and full of risks, such as your lift suddenly getting ill or forgetting that you need a lift home or turning out to be a nutter. It could be run along the same lines as a Letts scheme - earning points for giving lifts and then using the points to get lifts. You could perhaps even use your points to offset against road tax if you had lots at the end of the year.

2) There should be regular weighing/checking of lorries (at service stations?) to ensure that they're not travelling up and down the country with a just a couple of boxes in the back.

3) Get rid of 4x4s or maybe just the idiots who drive them.

4) Encourage people to use public transport by making it more efficient and bringing the cost down. Even with congestion it's cheaper and quicker for me use my car. Incentives and rewards for using public transport would encourage more people to use it too.

The councils have tried with Park and Ride schemes to keep cars out of busy town centres, they have also increased parking prices in town centres. However this only works to a certain degree, they also introduced the congestion charge.
I believe we should be stricter on whats allowed on the roads, in other countries they have a number plate system where cars with an certain number are allowed in town centres on different days.

Get public transport sytems on a par with the Scandinavian countries/Germay/Holland/France etc. And there would be a lot less need to own a car to get around, especially on longer journeys. Most people get a car because they are fed up waiting for public transport or paying high rail fares.

Completely pave everything and don't allow anyone to use the pavement so we can drive along that too.
How about sensible public transport routes and prices. While my friend lived with me I drove her to work because it took half an hour in the car but would have been 2 hours by bus!

Raise legal age of driving to 21 and make >60s retake test. Also compulsary periodical retests (say every five or ten years) would remove the bad drivers (which seem to be increasing).

better traffic monitoring system, and timed traffic lights.

where i live, the only way U can make it from one set of lights to the next set, b4 they turn red is by speeding, traffic monitors on the entrances and exits of junctions could show the flow of traffic, and adjust the traffic lights ahead accordingly, so the traffic keeps flowing, not stopping and starting, it would help with pollution a little as well

Bring back school buses everywhere, or walk with your kids if you live nearby.
And wouldn't it be lovely if public transport was clean, on time and enough of it put on a peak times - god knows people who travel at peak hours pay enough for it.
A four day working week, with everyone staggered would also be nice!

Have a properly funded public transport system. It doesn't matter how expensive the government makes cars if you cant get a bus or train to work.
