You can be an atheist and be an AA member. Even atheists can usually admit that somewhere in the universe, there's a power greater than themselves.
AA works for a lot of people; but not for everyone. However, if you're an alcoholic, what have you got to lose by giving it a try?
You might want to click on the link below to read what I'd say is a very realistic description of AA.
Here's a sample:
" Professionals have conducted surveys among veterans, patients, and selected groups of AAs. The accuracy is not the subject of my knowledge. But the facts about present-day A.A. are these in their studies: (a) A definite 75% fail to maintain sobriety. (b) Probably no more than one to five percent maintain permanent sobriety. (c) As often as not, those who aligned with AA have a lower success rate than those who got sober without AA. (d) To date there has been no adequate survey of success or failure among those AAs who like the pioneers were born again Christians, reliant upon the Creator for help, and joined together in some Christian church or Bible fellowship, or prayer group."

No, it's not a Christian God. And you don't have to do that to stay sober.
All that is required is a beginning; the admission that you are not in control and that there are things in this universe that are bigger than you. One of my friends claims that Mack Trucks are more poweful than he is, because if he doesn't see one coming, there's nothing he can do about it.
Right now, alcohol/drugs are your higher power: they do for you what you cannot do for yourself. The first couple of the 12 steps are about replacing alcohol with something that won't kill you. My first higher power was my homegroup. Whenever I walkd in the door, I felt OK. That was not something I could do on my own.
If you want to do it, a half decent sponsor will teach you how to create your own higher power that is yours and no one else's. If you want a God that wears chaps, rides a Harley, and drops F-bombs left and right go for it. You can do that- no one will stop you.
There are also tons of people in AA who don't believe in any kind of higher power. There are entire meetings without prayer in some places. But their lives are unbelievably miserable, whether or not they know that. I look in their eyes and only see pain.

God does not care if you stop drinking and AA meetings are lame because they still allow you to be addicted to cigarettes, pounding caffeine all day and complaining. You don't gain self control by giving it away and turning your life over to a God. You have to stop drinking because YOU care. That's the humor in it.
PS.
Boozy old men are a turn off so if you want to get laid, it would benefit you greatly to be sober.
PSS. Stop which war?
Israel/Palestine 1947-now
Ethiopia/Eritrea 1998-now
Colombia 1964-now
Afghanistan 1970-now
Sudan 1983-now

I basically found out I certainly have fatty liver on the age of 36. i do no longer pick to die early, so I provide up eating thoroughly. If messing up your liver hasn't gotten you to provide up, detect a therapist and ask your healthcare expert to place you on disulfiram, a drug that makes you violently sick even if in case you drink a pint.
