British English is more proper.
American English is more slang and less structured. Now, we are taught proper sentence structure in English and the use of words, nouns, verbs, adverbs, etc. But, we tend to talk and write different than we were taught.
Example: Which is the correct sentence?
I am in the yard!
I am on the yard!
I not have the answer, but, I would understand both.

The difference between American and Brittish English is this:
We say toilet, Americans say loo
We say Knickers Americans say pants
We say shopping Americans say groceries
Also they spell differently to us Britts, putting in z's instead of s's...its just one of those things, we have different words to mean the same thing thats all.

Not a lot.............and English is going to take over the world, so it would really help if we could all agree to iron out the few differences there are. The ideal is worldwide peace. While we must accept the right of people to speak the language of their choice, creating divisions for the sake of it is not a good idea.

A lot of the words are different for the same things...
In London you can get an American/English - English/American Dictionary... probably you can get one off of Amazon.com, too.
