It depends on the amount of the suit. You could file as a pauper and ask the court to set aside the filing fee. It also depends if you are educated enough to do that. You could possibly find a lawyer to take the case on a contingency fee. If you have no money, it's hard to do anything.

It depends on the type of lawsuit. some cases are regularly taken on a contingency basis, meaning the lawyer gets paid when you get paid. Also, lawyers accept payments on their fees, so if you want to declare bankruptcy or something, the filing fee and the lawyer's fee are allowed to be paid in installments.
barring all this, you are able to get lawyers to perform work for free through neighborhood legal clinics, law school clinics, and volunteer lawyer projects.

I'm assuming you'r in America - you must have no win, no fee lawfirms there... If the UK has such a screwed up concept it must also be the case in America. ;-)
