The big bang is a scientific theory about the CREATION of the universe, based on an an event where gases exploded and the result was the the movement of matter and the creation of stars, planets, etc. and the formation of the universe as we know it today.
That's the simple description...

Steve hawkings, who got ameotrophic lateral Sclerosis and has spent most of his career in a wheelchair, came up with Big Bang.
The Universe is expanding, and everything is moving away from everything. Thus, if you go back in time, everything gets closer together, and at some point, everything in the Universe goes back to one POINT. That is the point of creation, and one second before everything "exploded" there would be nothing ( perhaps a huge black hole ). Then, there was an explosion of sorts, and everything in our universe originated from this first point of the big bang.
You can search for Steve Hawkings. New developements in
physics show that there are 11 dimensions, and we pathetic primitive humans can only see 4 - X Y Z and time, but there are 7 more that we live in, but cant reach ( we can send out gravity waves into the other 7 for example with a blast from a nuclear bomb ) For this aspect look up Ed Witten ( the smartest man alive since Einstein, ) stringy Universe, M theory, BRANE, CERN and its Large Hadride Collider.
Steve Hawkings wrote a best seller, called a Brief History of TIME, and has hundreds of credits in physics and astrophysics.

there is an idea that the entire universe came from a tiny speck, which exploded in something they call "the big bang"... so its more about space than the world...
from examining the waves coming from different parts of the galaxy, they found that everything is moving farther apart, implying that it was once all together..

It is a theory related to the origin of universe. According to it the big bang resulted in the creation of universe. What was before that is still a misery.
