I've read everything by King and Koontz. In fact, I've read most of the big names in horror. Anyone have a diamond in the rough I'm missing? I like haunted houses and ghosts. Not so crazy about slashers or monsters.

The House Next Door by Anne Rivers Siddons is INDEED an excellent book. Sadly, it's the only scary book she wrote.

Have you checked out Whitley Streiber? He wrote The Hunger, The Last Vampire.....

How about Dan Simmons? I don't recall what all he wrote, but the book A Boy's Life, although long, was a ghost story.

I wish I could think of more, but I'm more into paranormal romances right now.

Ghost Story by Peter Straub, The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. Stephen King wrote a book 'Danse Macabre', in it he gives a list of book that he thinks are some of the scariest out there. Good luck and happy reading.

The Haunting of Hill House, by Shirley Jackson (I believe), is a very good book. Very creepy; the prose made the hair on the back of my neck stand up at times. And don't judge it by its movie (The Haunting); that was awful.
