it is a catalytic converter, and it is a good sign that you may have damaged it. There are ceramic filters in your converter, and it sounds like they may have shattered. Take it to the mechanic. If your catalytic converter isn't working right - then your emissions are not being filtered correctly.

Normally a catylitic converter makes no sound. If it is rattling then the crystals are free and eventually they will cause an exhaust restriction, and with the gas prices these days you sure don't need that. Depending on the make of car and type of converter it can be taken off and you can dump the crystals or take it to midas and let them install a new one, as they are usually welded.

Catalytic converter. No - it is full of platinum coated spheres. If they arent stuck together it shouldnt be plugged.
Have you tried blowing through it with a vacuum cleaner?

it shouldn't make any noise. it coluld have either ceramic beads or a ceramic honeycomb in it -either way it has broken loose and the converter should be replaced.
