You don't have to take it to a local gamestore. Any guy in your family can do it.
Here are the steps:
What you will need: Phillips screwdriver, and a mini phillips screwdriver, can be found in any man tool box. A blowdryer (this is only if you still have warranty on your Ps2 opening your Ps2 will cause you warranty to be void. There's a stick on the Ps2 that can tell if you open it, so all you have to do is blowdry the Ps2 and peel the sticker off so your warranty is still good). A q-tip and rubbing alcohol.
Whats the problem?
Game consoles are pressured to be finished in time and can't go under un-necessary procedures. The Ps2 was pushed fast to launch in time before the Holidays. The laser lens of the Ps2 is the worst equipment since Mac Computer. ROFL, just kidding Mac Users. Ok Basically? See the little fan behind your Ps2, its a major dust collector, your laser lens is covered in dust.
Solution:
Take your Ps2 apart and take a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol, ever so gently rub it across the laser lens. Three times let air dry.
Steps:
1. turn your ps2 upside down.
2. remove the stubs from your ps2
3. remove the screws from the ps2, there's 6 in total.
4. turn your ps2 right side up
5. take the top cover off the ps2 (do not yank because there is a cord connecting the reset button and eject button and yanking would cause your ps2 to go bad. Then you would really need a tech help)
6. Take your mini screwdriver and take off the small screws on the cd cover.
7. Look around, and you'll see some glass shiny thing (THATS THE LASER LENS) my guess will be it's really dusty.
8. Dip the q-tip in alcohol and ever so gently rub on the laser lens.
9. Put everything back and turn on your ps2.
10. YOUR PS2 SHOULD WORK BETTER THAN EVER.
Or
GET A LASER LENS CLEANING CD FOR $20. PUT IT ON YOUR PS2 AND IT WILL DO THE SAME THING.
I didn't think it would make it difference but it does, my Ps2 can play burnt copies, read all cds, even with mega-scratches on it. Ps2 seems brand new, STRAIGHT FROM SONY.
Good luck

Any kind of optical drive, whether it's in a computer, a DVD player, or a game console, uses a very precisely-focused laser to read disks. They go out of adjustment just a bit as you use them more and more. After 18 months, give or take, they've gone out of adjustment enough that the drive starts having problems.
A technician with the proper equipment could readjust the laser, but it would cost several times what the computer or DVD player or game console is worth, so the solution is buy a new drive. Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings.
