Who was the original singer/group?

The song "sweet fantasy" by Mariah Carey was a remake, does anybody know the name of the person/group that originally sang the song? I know Mariah changed some of the words, but the beat of the song, stayed the same.

I think his name was Bohannon or something like that. I used to love that song.
