this noise is driving me mad, it happens randomly and continues for a lomg period of time and not only when connected to the internet

OMG! We have the same thing! Our noise is from 'The Sheild' anti-virus program. I have it installed on my laptop and sometimes when it's off, just sitting on the table near the couch, it will chirp like 3 or 4 times in a row. It freaks people out! My neice thoinks it's possessed. Lol...

If you have an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), maybe the cheeps are coming from it. Try turning off your speaker audio on the computer to see if the sound is coming from the speakers or not. Maybe your Central Processing Unit (CPU) microprocessor fan's bearings are making a noise.

It could be your modem, Other noises or you are pressing the shift, alt, control, or winlogo key
