Well alot of the traditional country music was about cheatin, drinking, truck driving, life as many poor people knew it. I have a friend who prefers that type of country because she says she can relate to those types of songs.
On the other hand I like the more modern country, but I do love songs that make me laugh, whether they intended to or not , like Drop Kick Me Jesus Through the Goal Posts of Life, Get your tongue out of my mouth cause I'm kissing you goodbye, anything by Ray Stevens, even Gramma got run over by a Reindeer.
I guess it just depends on your state of mind when you're listening to country music and the type of country music you listen to.

Some is depressing to some people I guess, but I think country music, especially the Dixie Chicks, is the best.

Country music has sad music just like any other type of music. Singing of lost loves or being lonely are a topic that crosses every style of music. m

speak for yourself or listen to the country songs that aren't the "somebody done me wrong songs". back in the day when black music was called "race" music, country music was called the "white peoples blues" and expected to be sad. but in these enlightened times if you listen to the different music genres...they all have some depressing songs. i love jazz, rnb, some rap and really like anything by willie nelson....shh let that be our little secret.

Maybe it expresses yearning or homesickness, like in the classic 'Take Me Home, Country Road' which my buddy sings all the time.

I don't find that the case. Listen to "The River" by Garth Brooks. I find it inspiring.

it does not depress me, i like lean rimes and shnia twain alot, it makes me happy.
