It depends on how far away it has to go and how close you and your target are to a sorting facility.

For example, my mail is routed through a city about 30 miles away. I have a post office box. If someone went to the post office where I pick up my mail and mailed me a letter, it would still go to the sorting facility, when someone could literally pick it up, walk it ten feet, and put it in my box.

New York City has a large mail sorting facility, so that's not an issue. I would expect a letter sent in New York to be sorted overnight.

Once it is sorted, it goes out for delivery. For an address in New York, it can get to the delivery facility that same night and be sorted by the carrier and delivered the next day.

If your mail has to go somewhere else, like Chicago, it will usually be there next day. But let's say it has to go to Peoria, Illinois. It will go to a sorting facility in Chicago, from there to the local sorting facility, which might be somewhere around Peoria, then to a post office near the address, and finally to the address. That might take an extra day or two. Even priority mail is only guaranteed overnight to MOST locations.

One thing to consider is that mail going the other way has a disadvantage, namely the time change. By the time my local post office is closed, and its mail is headed for the sorting facility say 5:30 pm, it is 8:30 pm in New York, and much more work has been done. This might add an extra day for mail going eastward as opposed to westward.

This affects more than the post office. UPS has a cutoff time in Calfiornia of 5:30 pm for overnight mail, while on the east coast it is 7:30 or 8:30 pm, depending on your location to a UPS sorting facility.

Of course, proper and legible addressing helps. If you are handwriting, write the address, city, state, and zip in block characters with a dark pen on light paper. Use the zip+4. You can look it up at http://www.usps.com.

Orient the stamp properly. Magnetic inks in the stamp are "read" by an automatic sorter and used to align letters for the address readers.

If you use a word processor like Word or WordPerfect to type your addresses, use the zip code bar code feature. This makes it easier for the address reader to read your letter as well. If you send a lot of mail, using the carrier route number will also speed up your sorting, and may save you postage, too.

Hardly any Sea Time (getting stuck on the Floating Prisons) at all as a SEABEE or working in P-3 Squadrons. As an EOD Tech., I had only about 10 months of Total Sea Time in a bit over 10 years (but it really depends on what detachment you are landed in).
