After having in excess of 30 dwarf hamsters at one time, I would remove the male using a cup or something else as not to touch it or any of the babies. If the babies are touched, the mother may eat them or neglect them. If you must disturb them, use a pencil or a plastic spoon. I used a plastic spoon to move babies that may have strayed from there mother. It is know that the mother may eat there babies, but this has never happened with any of ours. To tell which sex the hamsters are, at this point the mother will have teats that you can see. Females are usually but not always bigger. The male should be removed only because mating usually takes place within 24 hours of the mother giving birth. This may have happened already, so keep an eye on the mother. You may have another litter in the next 2.5 to 3 weeks. In the next few weeks, lower the water source so the babies can drink from it. The babies have teeth and will bite! Millet or other small seed will be eaten by them soon, maybe even now. Furthermore, understand that hamsters will interbreed. I always tried to separate the males from the females by 30-60 days. Depending on the source, it can happen during that time.

well, you should be able to tell the momma from the daddy by which one is nursing the babies. Yes, the daddy probably should be separated just to be safe, and this may sound cruel, but the momma knows whats best, and if she eats some of the babies, she peobably has a reason for it. Except for taking the daddy out, otherwise just let nature run it's course.

If you have siberian dwarfs, the father is supposed to help with the babies, but bear in mind, he may get mama pregnant immediately, so if you don't want more babies, take him out.
I had the same thing happen to me. I heard squeak squeak squeak it took me like two days to figure out what it was...mama will eat them if she gets stressed out, so after you remove the father, just leave her alone. don't try cleaning the cage for a while . If you reach in, don't disturb the nest, and you can give mama extra treats, like a shred of meat, to keep her energy up. there isn't anything you can do if she wants to eat the pups, but if you keep her calm you'll be okay.
in a week or so when you want to clean her cage, just gather up the loose cage litter around the nest..don't bother the nest itself. you can do a thorough cleaning when the babies get bigger, and they will be bigger really soon.
good luck! enjoy them!

please read the links below--a lot easier than retyping it. while the male will help raise the babies if left there---he will also likely get mom pregenant again which im sure is too much to handle. best get him his own cage---hopefully not too late. as for cannibalism it can happen---dont touch them for 2 wks to help stop this & if u already have make sure u touch them all even mom/dad so they smell the same. u cant separate the babies from mom before 2 wks even if this happens because they need mom to survive.
