I believe birds perch in trees & sleep all night so they can be the early bird that gets the worm in the morning. :-)
I throw out bread crumbs every morning after hubby leaves for work at 6am and my front yard is full of cardinals, robins, wrens..... eating the bread. I loooove watching them.
Like some have said here, there are some that come out at night though.

Like a few people noted, there are nocturnal birds such as owls that are quite comfortable flying at night. And in warm areas (like here in southeast Texas) it stays warm long after sunset, and many birds who are normally active only during the day will flock to well-lit areas such as shopping malls to do their evening hunting well into the night.
Side note: We have a number of birds who roost under our redwood deck and even under the house, we can hear them chirping in annoyance when we walk around the house to use the bathroom or get a drink in the middle of the night.

It depends on the bird. If you have any owls where you live, they are nocturnal and will be flying around at night. However, most birds are diurnal and will be sleeping during the night; you might see some roosting, but not many will be flying around.

That's because it's dark. Owls are birds. They fly at night.

Some birds like Mockingbirds don't fly around at night, but they do sing at night to defind territory. Martins fly around during sunset to eat mosquitos. Owls hunt at night.

Most birds sleep at night, excepting, of course, owls.

Just owls. Bats fly at night but they are actually a mammal. There is a small cave on our property and we sometimes see them flying around at night here.
