I can only go by my experience. I didn't have children because this planet doesn't need any more people; there are enough unwanted, abused, and neglected humans to go around several times over. If I wanted to take care of another human I would have grabbed up one that was already here that needed the help and resources.

Although the expense of children is part of the problem, I think the real reason young people are choosing not to have children is because our entire society is set up for young, driven, single and childless people. Long work hours, late night entertainment and a fantastic singles and nightclub scene as advertised on half the TV shows and movies around make that lifestyle very attractive.
Let's face it folks, if you're young and unattached the world is yours. Before you settle down and get married, go see the world, have a few lovers, enjoy life! There is plenty of time to marry and breed later on when you're too tired to stay at the party!
Getting off my soap box now...
That being said, I have two kids and I'm pretty young yet. I still see a fair amount of the world and I have a very fun, adventurous life. I'm glad I had kids early though. I love them and they add a lot to my life, but like all kids they are a pain in the butt! If I'd waited, I probably would have remained childless forever and missed a great experience.

Since the invention and mass distribution of Birth Control devices (Pill, condoms, abortion) --- society is pioneering through how to work with these tools to control population.
Prior to Birth Control (B.C.) devices, sex usually came with the baby with no choice. The choice is thought to be given to women, however, if you look under the covers a little deeper, men are the ones who control, and benefit most from these new way of life.
New couples are witnessing the atrocities of Divorce, and seeing how their parents used B.C. Their parents then freak out when young couples want to get married, and persuade their children to wait to get married and have their own children. Mean while, those who live in Western Societies without the health care and education, still end up having sex which produce babies. So society needs to find value in young couples, and value in life. It's a pioneering effort, with many lives lost, lessons learned, and advances to morally help us find a way to handle our sexuality.
However, it does seem that the pendulum is swinging back and people are noticing how good young couples and babies are.

I find young couples to are very self-centered so it may just be a good thing they don't make babies. Children need so much more then just food and a roof over their heads
