I can't say that those processor is comparable, as Pentium D is dual core, and Athlon 64 3800+ (or 2800+) is single core.

EDIT: Ok, so it's a typo for X2.

See: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core2duo-e6300_9.html

according to that site's benchmark test, Athlon X2 64 3800+ win against Pentium D 945 considerably on most benchmark test, while overclocked, but when sped down to it's nominal speed (out-of-the-box speed), they're about the same.

It's not really a fair comparison, since the Pentium D is a "dual-core" processor.

In audio/video editing apps, the Pentium D will simply crush the Athlon. It will also win pretty much hands down in Photoshop and Premiere. The Athlon 64, however, will excel mainly in games.

Overall, I would expect the Pentium D 945 to win out in more than 75% of the benchmarks. You can go to this site to mix and match benchmarks to compare for yourself:

Other things to consider are:

- The Pentium 4 and Pentium D CPUs run pretty hot and suck a lot of power. If you're building one from scratch, they aren't the best option in this respect.
- The Athlons have a feature called "Cool & Quiet" which can cut the CPU speed in half when it's sitting idle saving power, lowering fan speed, and of course running cooler. Only the newer Intel CPUs called Core Duo or Core 2 Duo have this kind of feature.

the two will artwork large, while in comparison with what you're making use of now. The 945 is slightly speedier (no longer speaking approximately clock speeds right here), yet extra desirable than no longer likely sufficient which you will word the version between the two. seem into getting an X2 4200. right here in united statesa., they are in basic terms $25 extra costly than an X2 3800, and are notably speedier. they are speedier than a Pentium D 945, additionally.
