I am thinking about retiring in spokane washington or northern idaho and am wondering what the differences are econimically. Assume no mortage and no job and all other factors are equal.

Spokane is right along the Idaho border. So shopping and medical facilities are available.
Property in northern Idaho is not cheap. Huge population growth in recent years.
Idaho has a high (in my opinion) income tax. Max'es out at a bit over 8% but gets to that max real fast. A small amount of retirement income is exempt if you are 65+.
Idaho has 6% sales tax. Washington I believe can vary by city (not sure). Big ticket items -- take a nice couple hour drive to Missoula.

Depends on your situation. Good Luck.

I would say Spokane as the medical facilities are better there than in Northern Idaho. I retired in Vancouver WA, across from Portland OR. No state income tax and no sales tax in Oregon. Excellent medical facilities on both sides of the Columbia river. Best of both worlds. But property is expensive in Vancouver. It is probably more expensive in Spokane than in N. Idaho. But you write that mortgage and job are not factors and all other factors are equal. So I still pick to be close to the better medical facilities. And as retirees possible medical issues become more important year by year.

If you're concerned about money and interested in living in the upper northwest you might find this interesting...

Washington has no income tax. Oregon has no sales tax. If you move to Vancouver Wa. (across the river from Portland) and shop in and around Portland you could save yourself a small fortune. Portland is also a wonderful town (though prices in Vancouver might be higher because of this little advantage.) Just a thought.
