President Pervez Musharraf has opened a new and
especially bitter confrontation with radical Islam by
trying to rewrite Pakistan's controversial rape laws.
These place an almost impossible burden of proof on
women by compelling them to produce four "pious" male
witnesses to prove rape or risk being convicted of
adultery and face 100 lashes or death by stoning.
This law, known as the Hudood Ordinance, has been
regarded as untouchable since its passage 27 years
ago.
It also sets no minimum age for sex with girls, saying
only that they should have reached puberty. A powerful
militant Muslim lobby regards this code as sacred and
based on Koranic texts and sharia law. No previous
Pakistani leader, not even the country's first female
leader, Benazir Bhutto, dared reform it.
But Gen Musharraf's allies in parliament sparked the
fury of the militant opposition by introducing a Women
Protection Bill. This would remove the requirement for
four male witnesses to prove rape and set 16 as the
age of consent for sex with girls.
When this measure came before parliament, Islamic
radicals responded by tearing up copies of the bill
and storming out. "This bill is against the Holy
Koran," said Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the leader of the
militant opposition. "We reject it and will try to
block it in any possible manner." Other MPs chanted
"death to Musharraf" and "Allah is great."

Progression is a difficult thing when it comes to males giving up part of their dominance over women.
In the USA, black men tagged along on Susan B. Anthony's and Elizabeth Stanton's skirt tails for the right to vote. Anthony and Stanton started the fight and later brought in blacks for the cause. Males believe they are so superior that they first gave black males the right to vote and not until Anthony and Stanton were both dead, in 1917 did they finally allow women to vote.
My point is that a lot of cultures see a woman's only purpose on earth as being their servant, including sexual servant.
As far as the politics, I am proud that Pakistan is beginning to make an attempt to correct it.
As far as Islamic beliefs on the matter, a lot of religions oppress women. I do find it hard to believe that it actually says in the Koran that a man can have sex with a female of any age as long as she is in puberty. That is inhumane.
Also the 4 'male' witnesses illustrates that their culture has no value on females. Notice it does not say '4 witnesses'. It says '4 MALE....'

That is so disgusting. Four male witnesses? Now there must be a studio audience present for a woman to say something about being raped. How great the minds of some people work. I can't believe that people would oppose the reform of this repulsive bill. I would have to ask them if they had ever raped a woman before. I see no other reason to oppose this bill so vividly. It may be going against the "holy" Koran, but I seriously doubt that the Koran says blatantly out loud that a man can rape any woman of his choosing if there are less than four male witnesses. What is this world coming to when rape is tolerated and treated so common place?

That is a powerful argument for secular government.
Having a government based on religion makes every law based on some guy's interpretation of some book supposed to have been received from 'god'. There really is no accountability.
The raped women will be made right before Allah. it's the perfect way to cheat people out of their rights.
That's shameful

I am telling you those people are nuts, they don't want change because most are pedophiles and rapists, and want to get away with crimes against women, actually deep down they hate women and are afraid of their superiority, that women are smarter and are able to work and raise children, all they think a women is good for is sex and after that they are useless. Their are some sick s.o.b's over their. and some sick ones here to.

That's been common knowledge for a long time. What do you want us to say, that it's wrong? Of course it is. It's sexist and draconian, but there's not a great deal we can do about it except be glad that there are people in Pakistan willing to stand up for change.

Men who used religion to oppress should be castrated. Christians do the same thing when they say the jesus says that the woman must obey her man. All of it is sick and outdated.

typical Islamic behavior, women are considered to not have souls and are not going to heaven and so are treated only as animals.
There are animal cruelty laws in Muslim counties that do not include human women.

IT IS PRACTICALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO COLLECT FOUR WITNESSES.
EVEN ONE COLLECTS IT, THEN IN CROSS-EXAM THEY CANT SUCCEED.
INDIRECTLY IT SHOULD BE SAID THAT RAPE IS VALID, or ANY ONE CAN RAPE ON A PAKISTANI WOMAN IF SUCH LAWS ARE IN EXISTANCE.
