You're a person after my own heart.
I like books of short stories. They come in all sorts of genres, and are just the right size to keep ready to go sitting on the tank. One of my best toilet reads of all time was "Not so funny when it happened" a book of travel misadventures assembled by Tim Cahill.
If you're into sort of gently humorous hunting/camping/childhood stories, books by Patrick McManus are good. I don't like any of those activities, including childhood, and I still found his stories enjoyable.
Magazines. You have to keep a stack of magazines teetering on top of the pot, too.
Crossword puzzles, Sudoku are good if you're into that kind of thing.
Oh - and stash a pencil and paper within easy reach of the toilet. Never can tell what kind of good ideas will come to you while you're on the throne, and you don't want to have to risk either forgetting them or having to do a hideous duck-waddle out in mid-action to hunt for the errant writing devices.
Laptops - these days with WiFi and battery-powered laptops, you're pretty much set to work or browse anywhere you like. The problem is, some of them get pretty warm on the bottom, which is unpleasant on bare legs. I also haven't worked out a good solution for where to set the laptop down when I'm finished but not done, if you get my drift, and I need to tidy up and wash my hands. So unless you have a TV tray stashed in the can or some sort of cool swing down work surface, IMHO laptops aren't so great in the can.
What a great question! I can't wait to read what others write.
