It's not a what it's a who. My grandfather ate potatoes with every meal, three times a day. Even if grandmother made soup, if had potatoes in it. The one and only exception was the rare occasion when grandad would order chili at a cafe.

Good question! I was going to say "Ireland" ("potatoes are to famine as Ireland is to . . .")

But then I remembered I went to Poland and asked what their favorite vegetable was, what I could probably find on the menu in a vegetarian restaurant, expecting to be told "potatoes".

Only I was told "pork".

Maybe they were using the term metaphorically, poltically. Is there a political subsidy to vegetables in Poland?

P.S. I actually went there, to Suwalki, as it happens, and had a nice dish of chicken and potatoes. But I couldn't read the menu and it was like when I was in Japan. I just walked around the restaurant, pointing to things I wanted so the nice waitress could order them for me.
