I've never understood where you draw the line to distinguish between titles and labels so I've come up with my own. For example, I'm a recovering alcoholic and addict, I'm a husband and father, a home owner, and an economist. I do not, however, consider those labels, there facts. If others want to call me a republican or democrat, a liberal or conservative, or just a mean dirty prick, those a labels, and they are other people's labels, not mine. As for your brother-in-law, if he wants to call himself a skin head, that's a label he's adopted, and one that he can abandon by simply denying it. If someone needs a label to fulfill themselves, something fundamental is missing for them.
