Honesty is key! I think you should be up front about everything also. Try not to hide things about yourself that you think others wouldn't like. Whenever you are communicating about a problem, try not to place blame. Just address the issue and then find a solution. Sometimes you have to "agree to disagree"! You are not always going to agree about everything, so you have to remember that everyone is different and you might not be able to agree all the time. If communication get distorted and a fight is on the rise, then leave off where you are at and pick up later. This helps because you both know where you were pissing each other off and you will know not to over step this boundary. Since your question wasn't very specific, I will leave my advice at that. Courtesy. Treat everyone with courtesy and compassion, and you can't go far wrong. Also, if you want to maintain good relations with people, learn how to make them feel good about themselves when they're around you. There is no substitute for this knack.
Further, be honest, as no good relations are built on a falsehood. Course, if you really want to go along with everyone like a house afire, the one thing to remember is never to tell them anything they don't want to know.

Ask questions. Then listen. People like it when you take interest in them. It's a form of flattery. If all you do is talk about yourself then they will think that you are self-centered and they would be right.
